The Revd. Canon Pat Atkinson MBE

Pat lives in Brundall and is married with two grown up children and two grandchildren.

She first visited India in 1990, and after two further visits she gave up full time work to spend several weeks at a time (working alone) developing our projects in India. In those first 9 years of development work she lived in appalling conditions with the people she was helping because she would not have been trusted and accepted by the local communities if she had stayed in the good class hotels available. This resulted in several life threatening illnesses including malaria and dysentery.

In 2006, after 31 visits Pat consolidated work with the Indian Trust (which was formed in 1990) and with our newer work in Sri Lanka. Between visits Pat, who is also a trained nurse, continues to work as a Chaplain at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and is also a voluntary Chaplain at a Learning Disabilities Unit. She finds time, as an accredited teacher/counsellor, to arrange bereavement care groups and to date has set up 111.

Pat Atkinson
Each year Pat manages to give 60+ talks to raise funds for the Trust. In 2007 she was awarded an MBE for her long-term involvement in India. Pat has appeared twice on the BBC programme "Song's of Praise" to talk about her work and is regularly on local radio.

Pat say's "Over the years there have been some very difficult situations to deal with but I have not lost my passion for serving the people there. I also want to say that the MBE was accepted on behalf of our sponsors who have supported me and our work for such a long period of time."
