What is H.O.P.E?

For those of you not familiar with HOPE it stands for Helping Other People Everywhere and is a registered charity based in Hickling.

It has been established for 15 years and grew out of work in conjunction with BT, in Romania after the revolution. HOPE has always been concerned with practical work, which was mainly focussed, in the early years on renovating medical centres in villages.

This later became increasingly difficult although they did return to Romania in 2004 to work on a school attached to an orphanage, which was threatened with closure unless the facilities were improved. Recently 2 of HOPE's members returned and confirmed that the work that they completed was still in excellent condition and they then were able to provide additional help to the school.

Over recent years HOPE has worked with The Vidiyal Trust helping street children in India and in January this year they were asked to assist with a community project in Sri Lanka.

The Vidiyal Trust asked them to help Father Terence Fernando move this project on so that the local people could use it. Funding had been obtained from the Tsunami Relief Fund for their ambitious project but they needed further input, partly financial but mostly practical help. It was felt that HOPE's involvement would provide both this practical help and also serve to develop the project so that it could be immediately used.
